Ford key replacement in Coronado and San Diego

A Ford with no key is a common sight on the bay side, from F-150s outside the base gates to Escapes in the Mission Valley garages. We come to it. Lost keys are cut and programmed from the VIN, a spare is added while you still have a working key, a fob is replaced when the buttons have quit, and a transponder key is paired so the truck starts. All of it happens at the vehicle, in Coronado or anywhere along San Diego Bay.

Ford's immobilizer is called PATS, and it has been on most Ford models since the late 1990s. What changed over the years is the shape of the key. Earlier trucks and cars use a chipped metal key with a separate remote. Later ones fold the remote into the key head, and the newest have push-button start with a smart key. One useful detail: on some Ford models, two working keys are enough to add a third without any equipment, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.

Ford key types we cut and program

Transponder chip keys

Most Fords since the late 1990s run PATS, which checks the chip in the key head before allowing a start. Without the chip, the engine cranks briefly and shuts off, or never fires at all.

Integrated remote keys

Many Fords from the 2010s put the remote buttons and the chip into one key, often with a flip-out blade. We cut the blade and pair the remote and the chip together.

Smart keys and push-to-start fobs

Newer Fords with push-button start use a proximity fob that is paired to the vehicle. For most current Fords we have the matching fob on the van and program it at the truck.

Basic metal keys on older models

Fords from before PATS start on a plain cut key. On those the job is a blade cut to the factory code, nothing to program.

  • Fob and smart key programming for push-button start Fords
  • Replacement flip keys and remotes when the shell or the buttons have failed

Ford keys around Coronado and San Diego

F-150s and Rangers line the lots outside NAS North Island and the Naval Base San Diego gate at 32nd Street, and a sailor with a lost truck key is one of our regular Ford calls. Explorers and Escapes park in the garages at Fashion Valley and Hotel Circle and in the commuter lots near Southwestern College. Mustangs and Broncos come down to the Hotel del Coronado, Shelter Island and the Sunset Cliffs pullouts on a sunny afternoon. Focuses and Fusions are the used-car staple of the Mile of Cars and the streets around Plaza Bonita. Tell us where the Ford is and we bring the right key to it.

Ford key questions

I have two working Ford keys. Can I add a spare myself?

On some Ford models, yes. With two programmed keys, the vehicle will accept a third through a sequence of turning each key in the ignition, and the new key only needs to be cut to match. If you have one key or none, that shortcut is not available and we program the new key at the truck. Either way we can cut the blade for you.

My Ford cranks, runs for a second and dies. Is the key the problem?

That pattern is typical of PATS refusing the chip. It happens with a copied key that was never programmed, a key whose chip has been damaged, or occasionally a fault in the system itself. We read the immobilizer, and if the chip is the cause we program a fresh transponder key on the spot.

Can you replace a Ford smart key if the only one is lost?

Yes, for most push-button start Fords. We bring a compatible fob, pair it through the diagnostic port and remove the lost one from the vehicle's memory. Bring your ID and the registration; we check them before we begin. Our car key replacement page covers the visit.
