Hyundai's key situation is a little different from other brands. Many base trims sold up to about 2021 had no transponder at all, which is why they became a target for theft, so a plain metal key can be the real key on those cars. Higher trims from the same years, and most models since, use a transponder key or a smart key with push-button start. The VIN tells us which one your car takes.
Hyundai key types we cut and program
Basic metal keys on many base trims
A large number of Hyundais from before about 2021, particularly base trims with a turn-key ignition, have no immobilizer. On those the key is a cut blade and nothing else.
Transponder chip keys
Higher trims and most recent Hyundais carry a chip in the key head that the car checks before starting. We program it at the vehicle.
Remote-head and flip keys
Many Hyundais use a folding key with the remote buttons built in. We cut the blade and pair the remote, and the chip where fitted, in one visit.
Smart keys and push-to-start fobs
Push-button start Hyundais use a smart key that is paired to the car. We match the smart key to your VIN and pair it at the car for most Hyundai models.

Hyundai key questions
Does my Hyundai have a chip in the key?
It depends on the year and trim. Many base-trim Hyundais built up to about 2021 with a turn-key ignition have no transponder, so a plain cut blade starts the car. Higher trims and push-button start models do have an immobilizer. Text us the VIN and we will tell you which yours is before we quote.
Can you program a Hyundai smart key?
Yes, for most Hyundai models with push-button start. We bring a compatible smart key, pair it to the car through the diagnostic port and delete any that are lost. The car has to be present. See key fob programming for the details.
My Hyundai was stolen and recovered. What should I do about the keys?
If the car has an immobilizer, we erase every key from its memory and program a fresh one, so any key the thief kept will not start it. If it is one of the models without an immobilizer, a new key does not stop a repeat, and we will say so plainly; the ignition and door locks are often damaged in those thefts, and we repair or replace them at the car.
