Toyota key replacement in Coronado and San Diego

If you drive a Toyota in Coronado or San Diego and the key is gone, we come to the car. Lost keys, a spare before the last one disappears, a fob with buttons that stopped answering, a transponder key that turns but will not start the engine. We cut the blade, program the chip or the smart key and hand it to you in the driveway, the lot or the garage where the car is sitting.

Every day, 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM

Smart key with emergency blade

Toyota has used a few kinds of keys over the years, and the year and trim decide which one yours is. Older Camrys and Tacomas take a chipped metal key. Many models from the 2000s and early 2010s use a remote-head key, with the buttons and the chip in one plastic head. Most recent Toyotas have push-button start and a smart key that stays in your pocket. We bring the right one for your VIN.

Toyota key types we cut and program

Transponder chip keys

Most Toyota and Lexus models built since the late 1990s carry a chip in the key head, so a bare cut blade will turn the ignition but the engine will not start. We program the chip to the car on site.

Remote-head keys

Many Toyotas from the 2000s and 2010s put the lock, unlock and panic buttons on the key itself. The blade, the chip and the remote are all handled in one visit.

Smart keys and push-to-start fobs

Most Toyotas since about the mid 2010s use a smart key that the car detects when you touch the handle or press start. These are paired to the car rather than copied, and we do that at the curb.

Basic metal keys on older models

Some older Toyota pickups and sedans have no immobilizer at all. For those, a properly cut blade is the whole job.

Toyota keys around Coronado and San Diego

Toyota is everywhere on the bay side. Tacomas and 4Runners fill the lots at Silver Strand and along the OB Pier on a weekend, and a key that went into the surf or the sand is a call we take often. Corollas and Camrys sit in the Downtown garages near the Gaslamp and Petco Park and in the student lots at Southwestern College. Priuses and RAV4s come back to the Coronado Ferry Landing and the Hotel del Coronado with a fob that fell out on the ferry. Siennas and Highlanders wait at Fashion Valley and Otay Ranch Town Center. Wherever your Toyota is parked, from NAS North Island to the Chula Vista Bayfront, we can make the key there.

Toyota key questions

Do I need the original Toyota key to get a new one made?

No. When every key is gone we read the key code from the vehicle, cut a fresh blade and program the chip or smart key to the immobilizer with the car in front of us. Bring your ID and the registration or title so we can confirm the car is yours. The full process is described on our car key replacement page.

Can you program a Toyota smart key if all of mine are lost?

Yes, on most models. Losing every smart key puts the car into a state where a new key has to be introduced through the diagnostic port rather than by the usual add-a-key routine, and we have the equipment to do that at the car. It takes longer than adding a spare, so tell us up front that none are left.

My Toyota key turns but the engine only cranks. Is it the chip?

Usually, yes. If the security light blinks while you crank, the immobilizer did not recognize the chip, which happens with a copied key that was never programmed or a chip that has been damaged. We can pair a fresh transponder key at the car. If the light is steady and the key turns freely, the problem may be elsewhere and we will say so.
