Nissan key replacement in Coronado and San Diego

Nissan owners around Coronado and San Diego call us for the same handful of reasons: the only Altima key is gone, the Rogue's Intelligent Key stopped being recognized, the Frontier needs a spare before a trip, or a transponder key was cut somewhere and never programmed. We handle each of those at the car. Nothing gets towed, and you drive off on a key you have tested yourself.

Nissan's immobilizer, NATS, has been on most of its cars since about 2000. Early versions use a chipped metal key, later ones a remote-head key, and many Nissans from the last decade or so have push-button start with what Nissan calls the Intelligent Key. That last type is the one most people mean when they say the car does not see the key, and it is paired to the vehicle rather than cut.

Nissan key types we cut and program

Transponder chip keys

Most Nissans since about 2000 use NATS, which checks a chip in the key head. A blade cut without the chip will turn but the engine will not run. We program the chip at the vehicle.

Remote-head keys

Many Nissans from the 2000s and 2010s carry the remote buttons and the chip in a single key. We cut the blade and pair both parts in one visit.

Intelligent Key push-to-start fobs

Many newer Nissans use the Intelligent Key, a proximity fob for push-button start with a small emergency blade inside. For most models we bring the correct Intelligent Key and pair it in the parking space.

Basic metal keys on older models

A few older Nissan pickups and vans predate NATS and start on a plain cut key. For those we cut to the factory code and nothing more is needed.

What we do for Nissan owners

  • All Nissan keys lost, cut and programmed from the VIN once we have seen your ID and proof of ownership
  • Spare keys and second Intelligent Keys paired alongside the working one
  • Intelligent Key programming when the car says the key is not detected
  • Replacement remotes and remote-head keys for cracked shells or dead buttons
  • Erasing lost or stolen keys from NATS so they no longer start the car
  • Removing a broken key from a Nissan door lock or ignition and cutting a new one

Nissan keys around Coronado and San Diego

Altimas, Sentras and Versas are thick in the commuter lots of the South Bay, from the Chula Vista Bayfront to the garages near Third Avenue Village, and along the streets by the Naval Base San Diego gate at 32nd Street. Rogues and Pathfinders park at Otay Ranch Town Center, Fashion Valley and the Hotel Circle hotels. Frontiers and Titans launch boats at Shelter Island and haul boards to Silver Strand and the OB Pier. On Coronado we see all of them along Orange Avenue and at the Ferry Landing. Wherever the Nissan is, we make the key beside it.

Nissan key questions

My Nissan says Key Not Detected. Do I need a new Intelligent Key?

Not always. A weak battery in the fob is the most common cause, and the car will usually still start if you hold the fob against the start button. Replace the battery first. If it still is not seen, the fob may have failed or lost its pairing, and we program a new Intelligent Key at the car.

Can you make a Nissan key with no key to copy?

Yes. We get the key code for your VIN, cut the blade and program the NATS chip or the Intelligent Key with the car present. Bring your ID and the registration; we confirm ownership before any work starts. Our car key replacement page explains the visit.

A hardware store cut me a Nissan key but the car will not start with it. Can you fix that?

Usually. A key that turns and cranks without starting has most likely never been introduced to NATS. If the blank has the right type of chip, we program it. If it does not, we cut and program a correct transponder key and you keep the other as a door key.
